ABOUT THE TOWN

The Town of Hardwick is located in Central Massachusetts, approximately 25 miles west of Worcester. The town is comprised of four villages: Hardwick Center, Old Furnace, Gilbertville and Wheelwright. The total population of Hardwick is approximately 2,850. The town’s history dates back to 1739. The original name of the town was Lambstowne and was later renamed after Lord Hardwicke.

Hardwick Center, with it’s many historic buildings, make up a picture-perfect New England Town Common. In addition to the Hardwick General Store there are two churches, the restored Hardwick Town House, the Ruggles Tavern, an old brick schoolhouse, which now is home to the Hardwick Historical Society, and several magnificent historic homes.

The Hardwick Community Fair is held every year on the Town Common, on the third weekend in August, on the Town Common. The Fair is the oldest continuous fair in the country.

The Town of Hardwick has six working dairy farms, numerous riding, walking and x-country trails along Route 32A which runs through the center of Hardwick. Route 32A is considered one of the most scenic roads in New England during the Fall season.
