ABOUT
THE TOWN
The
Town of Hardwick is located in Central Massachusetts,
approximately 25 miles west of Worcester.
The town is comprised of four villages:
Hardwick Center, Old Furnace, Gilbertville
and Wheelwright. The total population of
Hardwick is approximately 2,850. The town’s
history dates back to 1739. The original
name of the town was Lambstowne and was
later renamed after Lord Hardwicke.
Hardwick
Center, with it’s many historic buildings,
make up a picture-perfect New England Town
Common. In addition to the Hardwick General
Store there are two churches, the restored
Hardwick Town House, the Ruggles Tavern,
an old brick schoolhouse, which now is home
to the Hardwick Historical Society, and
several magnificent historic homes.
The
Hardwick Community Fair is held every year
on the Town Common, on the third weekend
in August, on the Town Common. The Fair
is the oldest continuous fair in the country.
The
Town of Hardwick has six working dairy farms,
numerous riding, walking and x-country trails
along Route 32A which runs through the center
of Hardwick. Route 32A is considered one
of the most scenic roads in New England
during the Fall season.
